As guest speaker in creative writing classrooms and through membership in the Maryland Writers' Association, Al Karasa strives
to promote not only writing, but the reading of books in general, to help prevent it becoming a dying art.
His short stories have appeared regularly in national magazines and he was Feature Editor at 'Miata Magazine', America's
foremost marque club publication. His essays have been published in 'Wargamer's Digest', 'Sailing', 'Chesapeake Bay Magazine'
and 'The Courier', where he is a regular contributor.
Exponent of many talents, skier and sometime river rat, Al Karasa holds 15 engineering patents, secured during his tenure
in that field, and now pursues an interest in maritime history, motor sports, and the heraldic arts through their origins
in the medieval history of Europe. He writes extensively in these subjects with an eye to authenticity derived from personal
participation. He takes this view from Denis Jenkinson, a British journalist who never wrote about anything he hadn't experienced
first hand. Jenks devoted much time to the study of his craft. Authority was the hallmark of his work - a lasting example
to those who would walk a like path.
A longtime sailor, in vessels ranging from small sailboats to ocean going merchant
ships, Karasa spent many years at sea. His travels have taken him to Europe, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, the
West Indies and the Arctic.
An avid scholar of high performance driving skills, life-long sports car enthusiast and
racer, Al Karasa also participates in race driving education and coaching. Among many others, he owned and raced a TR-3, a
Spitfire, and an AC Bristol--the car from which the original Shelby Cobra was developed. He remains an active participant
in and follower of motorsports in the US and abroad.
